Daniel French,
Superintendent of the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union, Named 2009 Vermont
Superintendent of the Year
Daniel French, Superintendent of the Bennington-Rutland supervisory union,
has been selected as the Vermont Superintendent of the Year for 2009 by the
Vermont Superintendents Association.
French was presented with the Frederick H. Tuttle Superintendent of the
Year Award on May 14th at a meeting of the Association at Lake Morey
Resort in Fairlee.
French
was honored with the award for his educational leadership at the local and
state levels. He has inspired his
colleagues to integrate technology into school district operations and student
instruction. “Dan is constantly
advocating for educators to re-think assumptions regarding the possibilities
that exist to use technology to bring Vermont classrooms into the 21st
century,” said VSA president John Everitt.
“He has a vision that our students and teachers can utilize new tools to
engage young minds and heighten their learning.”
The
Frederick H. Tuttle Service Award is given annually to a superintendent who
makes outstanding contributions to educational leadership at the local,
regional and state levels and is committed to public education for the children
of Vermont.
In
accepting the award, French thanked his mentors and staff at the
Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union. He
also encouraged more superintendents to become involved in the statewide
conversation on the future of public education in Vermont, saying, “We need to open this discourse up to ensure
that our thinking can better inform key stakeholders.”
Before
serving in Bennington-Rutland, French served as principal of Canaan Schools in
the Northeast Kingdom where he expanded student learning opportunities through
innovative use of distance learning technologies. He currently serves as the secretary of the
VSA Trustees and chair of the VSA technology task force.
